LINDSAY QUAYLE - 'LQ'
Mixed media artist Lindsay is a RISD (Rhode Island School of Design ) 2000-2004 Alumni, BFA Jewelry & Metalsmithing. She initially pursued her study at RISD thinking she would get her degree in Painting as she had painted all of her young adult life. However after a multidisciplinary foundation year she quickly found her love for tactile 3D art, and chose Jewelry & Metalsmithing instead. Following the completion of her BFA she shifted from technical traditional jewelry making to a decade long career as a fashion jewelry designer for private design companies that sold her designs to major corporate stores. During that career she primarily designed in Providence RI, and Manhattan, NY. She also travelled throughout Europe spending most of her time in London, Amsterdam & Rome.In 2012 Lindsay created her own accessories brand with handmade jewelry, knitwear, and hair accessories. Yet throughout her design career, she quietly continued painting in her free time. After winning a death defying battle against cancer (Hodgkins Lymphoma Stage 4B) in 2015 Lindsay triumphantly birthed her current style and body of work. She worked hard to rebuild her life and create other sources of income to fund her life as an artist. She is now fully self employed enabling her to finally start bringing her art to the public. Lindsay is a fresh emerging artist creating original art that gloriously combines her painting, design, and metalsmithing talents.

ARTIST STATEMENT
When creating my work, the initial conception is sprung from a love for International historical art & design, tile motifs, modern art, graphic design. Heavily inspired by Pop & Folk art, I combine painting, design, and metalsmithing skills to express my personal symbology through tactile art.
Most pieces have one of the 3 primary colors combined with only black to blend every color in the art. I often use the colors in washes to "lighten" them by watering the pigment down in a similar way to watercolor. I create contrast in the works by bringing in pure white details and lining. I find it very satisfying to explore the range of colors one can create in a piece by simply adding black.
There is a brief session when I will roughly sketch my ideas, however I like to put the bulk of my creative energy directly into the piece itself. When building the panels, I carefully lay out wood tiles to create the tiled look making sure to leave imperfections in spacing and unique arrangements for a more authentic worn aesthetic. From there I work each piece meticulously layering colors with acrylic paint, various sheet metals, metal leaf, assortment of metal hardware, and flashing tape using screws, furniture tacks, and other various nails to create the final composition.
I find deep joy in creating paintings that have a found object quality to them. I am inspired by complementary aspects of opposites. I create compositions with subjects that are usually living, etheric, soft, and delicate and instead give them unbreakable worn armored looks or environments. I create something that feels like it could be old, but in reality is new. Putting all of this into practice results in almost personified pieces that seem to have a resilient life and mind of their own.
